ESL program for the sisters
"Allahu Akbar,Allahu Akbar ,Allahu Akbar , I never imaged I can do this only after three months I can read! I can read! I can read! These are the words of a 77 year old Yemeni sister.
She came in the ESL Program having a goal to read but didn’t think it would happen so fast. {Mashallah} .This was a very touching moment for all of us at the MAS Youth Center. The power of education was felt and no words can describe such a feeling. ESL program for the sisters is one of the best activities at the MAS Youth Center. When I entered the MAS Youth Center, I was surprised how these sisters think. I wanted to take these sisters' minds off of what should they cook for dinner? They were missing one of the most important ingredients of life: education. . Education is the only tool to help aide the ignorance that is affecting many women. I teach the sisters once a week for about three hours, it also depends on how long they can manage to stay focused. For many it can be very challenging at first with negative mind sets of failure, but with time and effort success is granted (Insha'Allah). I thrust upon them different material from dialogue, to phonics to any concern they ask for. I love to challenge their minds to show them what they are capable of.
The positive outcomes of the ESL program are plenty. Firstly, the sisters are using their time into something useful. Secondly, they have a goal in the center for themselves. Thirdly, it’s encouraging a better sense of sisterhood and communication between the sisters. For example, some sisters used to pass by each other and not even give salutations but now you can see that it has changed. I am not giving a lot of credit to this program because I teach it but its things that need to be recognized.
